The Independent Living Way
Independent Living Sudbury Manitoulin (ILSM) is a community based non-profit organization for people with disabilities in the Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin areas. ILSM is a movement rooted in the belief that people with disabilities should live with dignity, participate in all aspects of their life, control and make decisions concerning their own wellbeing, and be allowed to manage the resources invested to assist them. We are associated with 29 Center’s across Canada through Independent Living Canada (ILC).
Independent Living is a philosophy of inclusion. IL recognizes that Canadians with disabilities have skills, determination, creativity and a passion for life and believe they should be able to contribute to the economic, political and cultural fabric of their community.
At ILSM we challenge social limitations. Prevailing societal attitudes, outdated laws, and inflexible approaches from hiring, housing and customer service are often major obstacles to self-determination. ILSM provides programs and support services to diverse membership with a wide variety of physical and developmental disabilities. We specialize in peer support, education, and leadership to encourage personal development. Through our partnerships with other community organizations we foster integration and help these individuals overcome societal barriers.
We believe in self-determination. Our centre is managed and staffed by people with disabilities. We provide Skills Development, Peer Support, Information and Networking and Research and Community Development to our members and we promote an inclusive and welcoming environment to all who seek our services.
Independent Living is a social movement. The Independent Living Philosophy benefits not just those living with a disability but our community as a whole. When people with disabilities are given the opportunity to determine and achieve their own potential we save money, which would otherwise be diverted to social services, we develop a new human resource pool for business and education and our society becomes a more inclusive one.
